Overview

Deer & Wild Game

You have decided to process Wild Game,  like Deer, Elk  etc.  again,  but this time you will have some help.  The screens and forms you are about to see and use are going to make it much easier to handle this busy time of year.

You won't have to write down the same information in multiple places.  You will be able to easily find out what is going on with each Customer (Hunter).  And you will be on top of how much processing and cooking is needed.

Deer data goes in fast,  but due to volume,  live animals and lots of batches it could be 30 or more days before an Order is ready to pickup.

Here are some of the differences between Wild Game and Live Animal processing:

  • There isn't much in the way of "scheduled"  drops.  Hunters just show up whenever you let them.
  • There is NO Kill Sheet.
  • There is NO inspection.
  • You could have a line of people waiting to check in with both Whole Deer and Boxes of meat.
  • You can have one Tag number sequence for the animals,  and another one for the "partial" or "boxed" meat you will be processing.
  • The Tags are created automatically when you save the Order.
  • Boxes of meat need to be checked for bones before being ground up for sausage,  hot dogs  etc.
  • You probably take a deposit for certain Items.
  • You can "group" the animal and box Tag if you want so you only have one Cut Sheet and one Invoice.
  • You have to wait until you have enough meat to make "community"  Batches like hot dogs.
  • You likely will not get to all the hanging Deer and Boxes while they are in the cooler,  and will need to move them to a freezer.

The Process

The system has a lot of features,  but the process of handling Deer and Wild Game is straightforward:

  1. Schedule an Animal  (creates an Order + Tags)
  2. Select the Items (Cut Sheet Entry)
  3. Print the Check In sheet
  4. Weight any boxes to calculate Batches.
  5. Print the Cutters Sheet
  6. Cut any steaks/roasts  etc. and put them in storage.
  7. Schedule and process any Batches using any box meat and/or ground.
  8. Put the cooked packages in storage.
  9. Update the Cut Sheet with pieces and weights.
  10. Make an Invoice
  11. Hunter pays and picks up their Order !!

Change is Good

Moving from paper to using software takes a little dedication.   Sure it is probably faster to grab a piece of paper and write down the Customer name, address and what they want.

But the convenience ends right there.

If you need to make a list of Customers,  you have to write the info again.

To search for a Customer,  that piece of paper has to be on your desk.

If the paper gets lost or ruined or is hard to read,  you have a problem.

Creating a report of this weeks business requires you write the info again.

Filling in a calendar also means writing the info again.

When the customer calls,  how long does it take to answer his question ?

Plus,  you probably don't like writing that much.
